The Interfaith Community of Roland Park celebrated a "Picnic with a Purpose" on Memorial Day 2011 at First Christian Church. With air temperatures in the 90s, a breeze under the church canopy and shade trees cooled picnickers. About a hundred congregants from seven churches shared potluck dishes, with hamburgers and hot dogs provided by First Christian. Children enjoyed a variety of games, including water ballon toss. We honored Armed Services veterans from a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II to a U.S. Marine of recent service. Pastors told about joint service projects -- including Community Garden, My Sister's Circle, Our Daily Bread, and Seniors' Companions. The picnic was capped off with a special remembrance for loved ones in the form of personalized ribbons displayed on the front lawn of the church. Everyone agreed to hold the "Picnic with a Purpose" again next year! |
