Ash Wednesday Tradition
In the Church Calendar, Ash Wednesday is the first day of the season of Lent, a period of 46 days of fasting in preparation for Easter. It can be as early as February 4th or as late as March 10th depending on the date of Easter. The ashes from burning the previous year's Palm Sunday palm crosses are placed on the foreheads of believers in Jesus Christ as a sign of repentance. The minister who presides at the service makes the sign of the cross with the ashes, first upon his or her own forehead, and then on those of other worshippers.
On the following tabs of this page, see photos and listen to audio of the 2011 Ash Wednesday Souper Supper and Service of Ashes celebrated by First Christian, Mt. Olivet Christian, The Gathering, and St. Andrews. |
